Multiple tornadoes were reported across Mississippi late Monday killing up to 7 people, officials told the Associated Press. The total number of twisters will not be confirmed until the National Weather Service conducts surveys across the state, but there were at least five tornadoes that caused significant damage.
Search and rescue efforts were ongoing into the evening hours, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency,
The tornado reportedly touched down on the west side of town, near the Tupelo Airport, and tracked northeast toward the Tupelo mall. At around 2:50 the tornado reportedly crossed through the intersection of US-45 and US-78 through the northern limits of Tupelo, blowing semi-trucks off the road as it continued to move northeast.
The Louisville home of Mississippi Republican Sen. Giles Ward was destroyed by one of the tornadoes. Ward said that around 30 homes were destroyed in his neighborhood by the storms.
At least two tornadoes touched down in the Jackson, Miss. suburbs at around 6:35 local time. According to the National Weather Service, heavy damage was reported north of Richland, Miss. Damage was also reported in Brandon, Miss., according to the Brandon Emergency Operations Center. It's not yet known if there are injuries from these tornadoes.
